2024 Paris Olympics at Risk of Cyberattack

As the 2024 Paris Olympics approached, cybersecurity experts worked to shore up the Games' digital infrastructure, and while defenses have improved since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, researchers still

Details of The Story

According to an article by Dark Reading, as the excitement is building for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, behind the scenes, cybersecurity experts are working diligently to fortify the digital infrastructure against potential threats. While significant strides have been made compared to past events, such as the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, vulnerabilities still exist, posing challenges for those tasked with guarding the Games.

Recent assessments conducted by researchers at Outpost24 have shed light on the cybersecurity landscape surrounding the Paris Olympics. Their mapping of internet-facing assets revealed a more robust defense posture compared to previous events. However, a closer examination unearthed a handful of concerning gaps that could be exploited by malicious actors.

The assessment highlighted several areas of vulnerability, including open ports, SSL misconfigurations, security header issues, domain squatting, and privacy violations like cookie consent discrepancies. While these may seem minor, they offer footholds for threat actors seeking to penetrate the Games’ defenses. Additionally, the specter of phishing campaigns looms large, with domain squatting raising concerns of credential theft and other similar activities.

Cybersecurity remains a top priority for French officials, with the National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI) spearheading preparations for the event. Extensive penetration tests and awareness campaigns have been conducted to bolster defenses and mitigate risks. However, as history has shown, achieving complete invulnerability is an elusive goal.

As the Games draw near, the risk of potential for malicious activity is multifaceted, here are four strategies that the Olympics, and many organizations in general, can implement to enhance their security posture and mitigate the threat of cyber-attacks.

The 2024 Olympics would significantly benefit from implementing a robust Penetration Testing as a Service (PTaaS) strategy to conduct up to weekly, or perhaps even daily, penetration testing and vulnerability assessments of all digital assets associated with the Olympics. This proactive approach would help to identify security flaws as they come up, giving the Olympics a continuous view of their security posture.

By utilizing advanced security monitoring tools and techniques to continuously monitor their digital infrastructure for suspicious activities, unauthorized access attempts, and emerging threats the Olympics can enable swift action to mitigate security incidents and minimize their impact.

Through the development of comprehensive cybersecurity training programs for all Olympics staff, contractors, and volunteers to enhance awareness of cyber threats and common attack vectors, such as phishing and social engineering, the Olympics can help their staff to recognize and mitigate potential risks effectively.

By developing comprehensive incident response plans and conducting regular drills and tabletop exercises to simulate cyber-attacks the Olympics can ensure readiness to address and contain security incidents swiftly, minimizing disruptions to the event.

In the end, the success of Paris 2024’s cybersecurity efforts will hinge on the ability to adapt and respond to evolving threats. With the world’s eyes on Paris, the game to keep things running smoothly has officially begun.
